How Humans Failed Racehorses
  + stars: | 2024-05-05 | by ( Joe Drape | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It was a welcome conclusion for the multibillion-dollar sport imperiled by frequent racing fatalities, reckless breeding, dodgy doping practices and the old-fashioned greed of veterinarians, trainers and owners. Last year, 12 horses perished at Churchill Downs in the days surrounding the famous race. Two weeks later, a horse trained by one of the sport’s most recognized trainers died at Pimlico Race Course. Ambulances rumbled onto the track, emergency workers erected privacy screens and, behind them, vets euthanized the horses with injections. All of it put the social acceptability of one of America’s oldest sports at risk.

We were cleared as we knew we would be.”HISA investigated the deaths at Churchill and Saratoga and concluded that several factors, including frequency of high-intensity exercise, likely contributed. Some of the horses who died received corticosteroid injections in their joints within 30 days of racing. At its center was a veterinarian and drug compounder named Dr. Seth Fishman, who bragged on wiretaps about “having a relationship with top trainers and top owners” in the horse racing world. “What I’m trying to say is anytime you give something to a horse, that’s doping. agent posing as a New Jersey racing official pulled samples from a group of horses and sent them to a Hong Kong laboratory considered one of the finest in the world.

Trian claims Disney's board has failed to generate sufficient returns in recent years as subscription streaming losses have mounted and traditional TV subscribers have declined. Early vote countBoth Disney and Trian received support from influential shareholders ahead of Wednesday's meeting. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra Association have ratified a collective bargaining agreement calling for minimum salaries to increase by 15.8% over three years. The deal announced Saturday night with Local 77 of the American Federation of Musicians covers Sept. 11 this year through Sept. 13, 2026. The union said the deal requires management to increase the number of musicians hired each year and to ensure the contractual level of 105 musicians and two librarians is met. Each musician received a supplemental payment of $750 or $1,500 in each year of the contract, the union said. Musicians struck on Sept. 30, 2016, causing cancellation of that season’s opening night, then announced an agreement two days later.

Building collapse in Havana kills at least one, others trapped

HAVANA, Oct 4 (Reuters) - A building partially collapsed in the Cuban capital Havana on Tuesday night, killing at least one person and leaving at least two others trapped beneath the rubble, the municipal government said. The collapse in the Old Havana tourist district gutted the insides of the decrepit building that was home to 13 families and 54 people. It wrenched terraces off its facade and trapped many people beneath piles of rubble and rebar. One person had been killed and two others were hospitalized in critical condition, the municipal government said in a statement. The building collapse is the latest in a series of disasters that have beset crisis-racked Cuba, including a gas explosion that destroyed Havana´s Saratoga Hotel in 2022 and a massive tank farm fire in Matanzas, an hour east of the capital, several months later.

For more than 30 years, Gregory and Loretta Smith were regular visitors to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., traveling from their home in Rockland County on weekends and summer holidays to attend the horse races and enjoy the pace of life in this small city about three hours north of Manhattan. “We started to discuss, ‘Where do we want to put our roots down?’” Ms. Smith, 61, recalled. “And I said, ‘I want to live here. It has everything we want: a small walkable city with a good social environment, and access to nature. Just an overall phenomenal quality of life.’” That’s how the couple came to buy a 1,219-square-foot, two-bedroom ranch house on 0.23 acres for $399,000 in April.

This past Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, an undefeated colt named New York Thunder was just strides from winning a $500,000 stakes race when he stumbled and unseated his rider. New York Thunder had to be put down after shattering his left front fetlock. It was the 12th horse fatality — the eighth while racing — at the Saratoga summer meet. In the wake of the deaths, New York racing officials have vowed to spend millions on PET and CT scans and outfit horses with sensors in the hopes of diagnosing pre-existing injuries before they become fatal. And a synthetic racing surface, which equine injury data shows to be significantly safer than dirt and turf tracks, is being installed for winter racing at Belmont Park and is being considered for both Aqueduct and Saratoga.

I’m going on a two-week hiking trip in August and am trying to figure out what to pack. We’re limited to about 33 pounds, so I need to pack light. I’d love to put together a wardrobe that’s practical, chic and wearable beyond the trip. The capsule holiday wardrobe is the holy grail of travel: an interchangeable, efficient system of dressing that in an ideal world necessitates no more than a tote and a bag that will fit in an airplane overhead bin. A slow-moving storm system brought heavy rain across a wide section of New York State on Sunday evening, flooding streets and prompting rescues for drivers whose vehicles were stranded on inundated roads, the authorities said. Two areas appeared to be most affected, according to the National Weather Service: Rensselaer County and nearby towns, and farther south in the Hudson Valley, including Dutchess, Orange and Ulster Counties. County officials, police departments and other agencies were fielding dozens of emergency calls prompted by the flooding. In Saratoga County, near the town of Waterford, Routes 4 and 32 were flooded with up to two feet of water, said Andrei Evbuoma, a meteorologist with the Weather Service in Albany.

After a disquieting period in which seven horses died at Churchill Downs during the run-up to last week’s Kentucky Derby, horse racing is again caught up in a controversy, this one a doping case involving one of its biggest stars. On a rainy September afternoon last year, a colt named Forte eased into the starting gate of the Hopeful Stakes, an early and important race on the road to the Derby, at odds of nearly 7-1. He apparently relished the sloppy racetrack in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., unleashing a powerful kick in the stretch to win by a length. Shortly after leaving the winner’s circle, however, Forte was given a post-race drug test, which he failed but has yet to be adjudicated before New York regulators, according to two people who are familiar with the matter but are not authorized to speak about it. The positive test was for a substance used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation, according to those two people.
Others want a rematch with the legally challenged Trump or say that the younger, lesser-known DeSantis would be a bigger threat to Biden. Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said she prefers Trump because Biden beat him in the 2020 presidential election and will "beat him again." Trump has proven he could turn out Republican voters and win the presidency, but he's under indictment and could face even more charges. "That said, this will be a tough race no matter who the Republican nominee is, and every Democrat needs to take it extremely seriously." And both DeSantis and Trump are pushing "extreme" agendas to try and "outmaneuver the other one."
Add in a disability, chronic condition or injury, and it can be even more challenging to incorporate exercise into a weekly routine. Regular exercise can also help manage the symptoms associated with some disabilities. Exercises to consider if you have limited mobilityWhich types of exercise are appropriate and helpful will depend upon your specific health situation. Examples of seated workouts include using a hand cycle and performing chair exercises with or without weights. Isometric exercises help maintain muscle strength while preventing further muscle deterioration.
Franchisee Meridian Restaurants Unlimited is closing 27 Burger King locations in the US. Another Burger King franchisee, EYM King of Michigan said it will close 26 locations last month. Another Burger King franchisee, TOMS King Holdings, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January for similar reasons.
"Let Trump steep in his own juices." "Let Trump steep in his own juices." If Trump is indicted, Biden undoubtedly will be asked for a response in every interaction he has with reporters. Biden has been more rhetorically disciplined as president than he was as vice president and a senator, when his verbal gaffes were routinely used as punchlines. The smart move would be to say he'll let the criminal justice system take its course and let Republicans fight it out, said Bannon.
